NEURO-

MODULATORS

Neuromodulators are a type of injectable medication used to relax specific muscles in the face that contribute to unwanted lines and wrinkles. Commonly treated areas are the "angry-11" vertical lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead wrinkles, crows feet (around the eyes), and bunny lines (along the sides of the nose.)

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A NEUROMODULATOR?

Good candidates for neuromodulator treatment include individuals who have one or more of the following aesthetic concerns. These are the most commonly requested and performed treatment areas:

  • Angry 11 vertical lines between the eyebrows

  • Horizontal wrinkles of the forehead

  • Crows feet wrinkles around the corner of the eyes

Dr. Gerecci also performs specialized injections that require more expertise than the standard treatment areas. Injections can be performed to help:

  • correct eyebrow asymmetries

  • provide a chemical “browlift”

  • diminish fine lines around the lips

  • improve a gummy smile

  • fix downturned corners of the mouth

  • smooth out dimpling of the chin

  • relax hyperactive masseter activity leading to a square-shaped face or nighttime grinding/TMJ discomfort

  • smooth out vertical platysmal bands of the neck

  • relax muscles that lead to a bunched-up appearance of the lower eyelid.

WHAT KIND OF NEUROMODULATORS CAN I GET?

There are several types of neuromodulators available. Dr. Gerecci only uses different types of neuromodulators depending on treatment area, intended effect, reaction or response to prior treatment, and other reasons. Dr. Gerecci may recommend for you:

  • Botox®

  • Dysport®

  • Jeauveau® (also known as "newtox")

HOW IS A NEUROMODULATOR TREATMENT PERFORMED?

Sometimes injections are done to “treat” a problem that already exists, but injections are also performed to “prevent” unwanted lines or wrinkles of the face. A typical treatment session is 15-30 minutes and involves multiple tiny injections of the desired treatment area. Dr. Gerecci values patient comfort and utilizes multiple techniques to help minimize discomfort during the treatment session. She makes sure each patient understands what product is being used, what dosage, what treatment areas, expected outcomes,  risks/benefits of treatment, cost, and is given detailed explanations and instructions. A complimentary follow up visit is scheduled 2 weeks after injection to ensure patients are satisfied with their results and any questions or concerns are addressed.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER NEUROMODULATOR TREATMENT

Some patients may experience bruising after their injections. There is usually not swelling after injections. It can take up to 3-4 days before an effect is noticed, but some people may notice a difference as early as 1-2 days. Peak effect is usually reached by 10-14 days. Duration of  effect depends on the type of product used and the amount of product used. Most people see the product effect wear off in 3-4 months.

ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO NEUROMODULATOR TREATMENT?

Depending on your desired aesthetic result, there may be some alternative treatments available. In some situations, a surgical procedure is recommended depending on your goals and concerns.
