FACIAL FAT

GRAFTING &

TRANSFER

Facial fat transfer uses a patient’s own tissue as a “natural filler” to replace lost volume and enhance facial fullness. This is accomplished using liposuction techniques to collect fat in one area of the body and transfer the excess tissue to rejuvenate the face. Fat grafting can enhance hollow facial areas, restore the youthful contour of the cheeks, or fill in prominent facial creases like nasolabial folds.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR FACIAL FAT GRAFTING?

Fat transfer can provide natural results for individuals looking to correct age-related volume loss in their face. Patients considering facial fat grafting treatment typically report the following concerns:

  • Sunken cheeks or under-eye hollows

  • Thin lips or a loss of lip volume

  • Loss of volume along the jawline

  • Loss of volume in the temples

  • Nasolabial folds

  • Marionette lines

  • Wrinkles and shallow facial scarring

HOW IS A FACIAL FAT GRAFTING PERFORMED?

Fat grafting can be performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or a general anesthetic. The tissue is collected using liposuction techniques. The abdomen, thighs, or flanks are the most common areas wherein fat is harvested. Once the appropriate amount of fat is collected, the fat is purified and processed. Small cannulaes are then used to re-inject the fat carefully, and skillfully, into the face.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER FACIAL FAT GRAFTING SURGERY

Often, a light compressive dressing is used for the first 24 hours. The morning after the surgery, Dr. Gerecci will see the patient in clinic and check incisions and go over wound care. In the case of facial fat grafting, prolonged bruising and swelling are expected. Individual results can vary depending on the quality of fat. In most cases, one-third to one-half of the fat grafting volume introduced will be retained.

ARE THERE NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES TO FACIAL FAT GRAFTING?

There are some non-surgical treatments that can mimic the quality and longevity of rejuvenation facial fat grafting is able to accomplish. That said, for individuals who are not quite ready for surgery and/or do not mind returning for continual touch-up visits, minimally invasive options like dermal fillers can be used. For a more permanent option, facial implants are a good choice for patients looking to increase volume in certain areas of the face.
