AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR NONSURGICAL HAIR GROWTH TREATMENTS?
Non-surgical hair growth treatments are ideal for men or women with thinning hair who are looking to increase the size and density of their hair. These treatments do not restore hair that has already been lost (This requires hair transplant.) You must first have a thorough medical evaluation to determine the cause of your hair thinning or hair loss and make sure you are an appropriate candidate.
WHAT KIND OF HAIR GROWTH TREATMENTS CAN I GET?
There are several categories of treatments that Dr. Gerecci offers for patients seeking to improve the appearance of thinning hair and slow the hair loss process:
-
Topical medication (non-prescription)
Minoxidil (name brand Rogaine) is an FDA approved (over the counter) topical medication used for the prevention of hair loss. It has been clinically tested in men and women and is proven to be effective in preventing hair loss.
-
Prescription oral medication
Finasteride (brand name Propecia) is an FDA approved medication (by prescription only) that helps combat male pattern baldness. It is not appropriate for women. Finasteride is taken once per day (orally) and has been clinically proven as an effective treatment for slowing down hair loss for men.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment can be used for treating thinner or "miniaturized" hair utilizing a technique known as meso-therapy. This involves multiple injections directly into the scalp to help increase the hair follice size and thickness.
HOW ARE HAIR GROWTH TREATMENTS PERFORMED?
If a medication like Finasteride or Minoxidil is recommended, you will be given instructions on how to take these and side effects to watch for.
For PRP injections, your treatment is performed in the office and will last about 1 hour. Blood is drawn from your arm and spun down using a centrifuge. This step separates the red blood cells from the platelets. The platelets are then extracted using a syringe. In the meantime, you will receive a "Scalp-Block" which is a series of local anesthetic injections to ensure your scalp is numb for your PRP injections. Next, Dr. Gerecci will inject the syringe full of PRP directly into specifically targeted areas of the scalp, at the proper depth to get optimal results.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HAIR GROWTH TREATMENT
-
Minoxidil
Once you start using Minoxidil (Rogaine) you must keep using it to continue seeing the benefits. It typically works best for thinning hair at the crown of the scalp, but can lead to improvements at the frontal hairline if there is thinning hair there. It is not effective in areas that are completely bald or void of any hairs. Studies have shown the greatest benefit is seen from 5 months to 2 years after first application.
-
Finasteride
Finasteride (Propecia) lowers the production of a particular hormone (DHT) that makes susceptible hair follicles at risk of "minaturatization." The crown portion of the scalp has been shown to benefit the most, but the entire scalp can see improved results from long-term use of this medication.
-
PRP Scalp Injections
After a PRP hair restoration treatment, you may experience a minimal amount of discomfort, swelling, itching, scalp tenderness, and/or bleeding at the injection sites. Some people may experience a headache. The recovery is usually quite painless and easy. A series of treatments is recommended to obtain optimal results- usually 1 set of injections repeated every 4 weeks for a total of 3 sessions. Maintenance injections then spaced out to every 6 months or 1 year may be recommended.
ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO NONSURGICAL HAIR GROWTH TREATMENTS?
The above treatments are best at preventing hair loss or thickening thin hairs. If you have already lost hair and have bald areas, the best treatments are surgical. Dr. Gerecci does not perform hair transplants at this time but she can recommend you to someone who does. Alternatively, bald areas or areas of thin hair can be camoflauged using a technique called "micro-pigmentation or tricho-pigmentation.' This involves tattooing of the scalp and Dr. Gerecci can recommend you to someone who performs this.
