RHINOPLASTY & NOSE

SURGERY

Rhinoplasty or "a nose job" is a facial plastic surgery procedure designed to enhance the cosmetic  appearance of the nose, as well as restore  the function of the nasal airway. Whatever the reason for having a misshapen nose or trouble breathing through the nose, our Portland facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Deniz Gerecci, is skilled in both the cosmetic and functional (breathing) aspects of this complex cosmetic surgery.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A RHINOPLASTY?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty generally include individuals who are bothered by one or more of the following concerns:

  • A hump on the nasal bridge

  • A curved "deviated" nasal bridge or septum

  • An overly large or wide nose

  • A broad, poorly defined and/or downward-turned nasal tip

  • Unevenly sized and/or misshapen nostrils

  • A deviated septum restricting proper airflow

HOW IS RHINOPLASTY PERFORMED?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an operating room. This is an outpatient surgery and patients go home the same day after awakening from the surgery. The scarless or endonasal technique can be performed with all incisions placed within the nose. If an external approach is required, then a small incision is hidden on undersurface of the nose. Each patient is examined individually to determine which approach is most appropriate.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER RHINOPLASTY

This is an outpatient procedure. Once the procedure is complete, patients go home with an external nasal splint that is worn for 1 week and a small amount of internal nasal packing. The external splint, tape, and sutures will remain in place for one week. Patients can expect swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, which should both resolve after the first week. Makeup and skin care regimens can be restarted on day 10 after the procedure. Patients usually have minimal downtime of one week before returning to work, and we ask those patients traveling from out of town to stay for routine checks during this time period.

ARE THERE NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES TO RHINOPLASTY

For patients who desire a non-surgical method of resculpting their nasal features, liquid rhinoplasty can be a minimally invasive technique to change the appearance of the nose. This treatment uses fillers to alter the size or shape of certain aspects of the nose. While this technique cannot achieve results that are as extensive and long-lasting as surgical rhinoplasty, liquid rhinoplasty offers a more conservative treatment to cosmetically refine the proportions of the nose.
